The tongue is a muscular organ in the mouth. It is covered with a tissue called the mucosa. It is covered by a number of taste buds. There are many nerves that help in transmitting taste signals to the brain that helps in taste sensation. The functions of the tongue are as follows:

The tongue helps in detecting different tastes of the food like sweet, sour, salty & bitter by the taste buds which are located on the tongue.

Taste buds are small structures present on the surface of the tongue which provide a sense of taste. Taste buds for sweet sensation are located at the front and at the middle of the tongue, for sour taste are located at the two lateral sides of the tongue, for salty taste are located at the front of the tongue near the tip, for bitter taste are located at the back of the tongue which is close to the end of the buccal cavity.
